I Spent one Summer with a Semi-colon
September 26, 2025 Ball Angela

I spent one summer with a semi-colon

in those days people called it shacking up
an expression implying poverty
and bondage what nonsense
despite his reputation the semi-colon
was gentle even tender I spent days
jumping off of his period nights
curled within his comma the strongest
most upstanding mark though also
the most hated I was stolen away
by a lowly parenthesis I am fairly comfortable
both of us in our dotage

Angela Ball’s most recent book of poetry is “Talking Pillow.” She teaches in the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, where she lives with her two dogs, Miss Bishop and Boy.
