Bread in ’47

During the war and for some time after the war,
there was an institution in Buguruslan which
was helping to find relatives who went missing.

That black bread, that postwar bread,
that stale bread wrapped in fresh newspaper
dad brought us on weekdays and holidays—
when he could get it, that postwar bread.

From the tablecloth, if we had one,
my mother collected the last crumbs,
just as we used to collect in Buguruslan
the last crumbs of our family.

Minsk and Stalingrad had already been regained,
the celebrations completed, the last shots fired.
But still in Buguruslan we didn’t know
where our uncle, sisters, and brother were.

And my father brought us black bread,
wrapped in yesterday’s newspapers—
in the sorrow and the joy of the planet—
that black bread, that postwar bread.
