MEMORIAL

uno
vuelve

MEMOIR

we
return
to the place where we left our life
when everything was as young as dawn
we step exhausted
on steps that no longer resist us
we glance at the town clock
to find the same hours that hurried us through childhood
someone kisses us sweetly on the cheek
and on the other we feel the blows of oblivion
we return
and no mother says we’ve been waiting for you
no father scolds us for the absence
on docile waves time returns us to the origin
to this-that house
the baby crying for a bite
and the patio with grandparents waiting perpetually for death
we return and no dog wags its tail for us
nobody even to say this place is hard why did you return
just ancient questions and the terrible sameness
the church and its beggars
horror and its judges
silence and its lineage disrespecting the statues
(the world is barely ours how fucked up is that)
rage is not the same it grows ruthlessly
it is a stalking beast
and inside us it says forgiveness is no longer possible
