CAROLINE

The first time I saw Caroline
she was shooting rabbits with a pistol
from the front porch of her house
in Herkimer County, New York

Then she quit shooting
was holding her pistol
pointed at the porch floor
her expression pleasantly vague

So I asked her
could I come onto the porch
and I asked her
could I examine her weapon
and she put her arms around me
and she kissed me
meanwhile flinging the pistol
into the far corner of the porch
where it killed a chicken
