Qinghai
a prayer flag rolls around a heap of round stones
every hilltop wears the same crown
there are more hilltops to whose invisible fissures snow recedes
slumber on the train meandering toward Hoh Xil
a bird drops into a bush of sandthorns
Yellow River ripples in bilious light
turns around a big bay and flows into sunset
a few souls carry sheepskin rafters
rustling lanes, night on the other shore
Tengchong
volcanic ashes, dark like the memory of dead souls
that pile up around those mountains
that the Yi people use to build villages
and to bury the dead
snow warmed by aeonic geothermals
cools down canola flowers and bee brains
tourists balloon up to inspect the wounds of the earth
immense pits, edges bright, like one
urn after another formed by giants,
hold their circular voids inside
after an outbreak, afterwards
bleakness has long reigned in this place
seeds taxed, yet no amnesty order
is issued to pangolins
gingko trees and misery survive
after a bath in the hot springs
a thunderbolt bursts out singing
and jolts the sky, out of the blue roofs lit
