Tara Skurtu

June 27, 2018 Skurtu Tara

Salt and sour bait
in the wind, night-
crawlers pulsing
in a styrofoam cup.

I untangle one
and bait it. The hooked
worm loops around
and around itself.

I bring you bass
strung by their mouths
like a bundle of shiny
peppers, eyes like
maps of a lake.

Tara Skurtu is a two-time Fulbright grantee and recipient of two Academy of American Poets prizes and a Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship in Poetry. She is the author of the chapbook Skurtu, Romania and the full-length poetry collection The Amoeba Game.
