Ant Story

Each ant was given a different part of the message to carry.

It would be reassembled at the destination.

It seemed like a good enough plan.

No one anticipated that a rockslide in their path

would divide the line of ants into two lines,

that the path would then diverge around an autoshop, and then divide again

like the fingers of a hand

spreading farther and farther apart…

Each ant was given a different part of the message to carry.

But two of the ants got married and settled down,

and one felt a calling to the church,

and one (you know which one)

perished in a puddle of red wine,

his legs kicking feebly in the Cabernet.

Around our feet now the water is rising,

and it gets dark.

All we have left is our fragments

and our desperate determination.
